Out of Touch Unions
Community Solidarity organized protests on January 18th in Toronto to protest the election of Donald Trump. The people interviewed appeared concerned that the far-right had taken over the United States and vulnerable people everywhere are under attack.
There is no doubt that the people interviewed on CP24 are good and sincere people even if their fears are misplaced. Make no mistake about it, Donald Trump is a threat but not to vulnerable identity groups. He is a threat to a vulnerable nation like Canada.
Trump's statements about the 51st State are his intention to vacuum out the Canadian manufacturing sector and perhaps even Alberta as a bonus. Trump is not evil but he has seen the effects of global trade on the American working class which begs the question. Why can't the unions that back Community Solidarity not see what Trump, a capitalist, has seen? The real threat is not the fictional alt-right, but governments both left and right that sell out to global oligarchs who move operations to countries where workers are cheaper because they have no rights. There are no protests about that!
Unions need to get back to their roots and stay out of the progressive movement that not even itself knows where it's heading. It's really sad when it is hard nosed capitalists that speak about the working class and not the unions that are so absorbed with identity politics.
Fears about the alt-right mean nothing if the super power that is next door seems to contemplate ways to lure away the Canadian manufacturing and oil sector. The unions need to stop scaring the members of Community Solidarity with fears of things that don't exist and pay attention to things that everyone should have a fear of which is the demolition of the Canadian economy by a neighbour.
Perhaps the Premiers of Canada should consider bringing down their own tariffs on their fellow Canadians instead of complaining about Donald Trump who laughs at them. It's hilarious that the Premier of Ontario wears a sports cap that says Canada not for Sale, but he has not hesitation to slap tariffs on Canadian products from other provinces. It's wrong for Trump but not wrong for him!
